The universe is approx. 12-16 billion years old. The Milky Way is considered to be a spiral galaxy. It is made up billions upon billions of pound of gas and dust. All these form the stars and planets. the Milky Way is 1,000 light years thick, and contains over 400 billion stars. The cosmic microwave has helped us figure out the age of the universe.
